Cassia Surattensis

There are a 14 cassia species found in Hong Kong of which 9 are introduced species from S.E. Asia, India and S. America. They are all small to medium sized trees or shrubs with alternate pinnate leaves. Many of the introduced species are popular for landscape planting and can easily be observed when in flower on roadsides and parks throughout the SAR. All the species produce seeds in flattened pods. They are most easily recognisable by differences in flowering

The illustration given is of Cassia surattensis or the Sunshine tree which is a native of S.E.Asia but is the most commonly planted species in Hong Kong.
